A chain is a system
Each link affects the way a chain bends, hangs and transfers force. Decorative chains can emphasize rhythm and hand-forged variation, but load-bearing work requires engineering, material traceability and appropriate testing.
The first editorial question is therefore not “How is a link shaped?” but “What is this chain expected to do?”
Form and join
Traditional forged links are shaped from stock, closed and joined by a workshop method suited to the material and purpose. The link section, scarf preparation, heat control and finishing all affect the visible result.
A maker can preserve evidence of forging while refining sharp transitions and checking every join. Decorative texture must never obscure critical inspection points.
Document limits
A publication cannot certify a chain for lifting, restraint or overhead use. Those applications require rated components, current standards and competent inspection. Our visual studies are artistic illustrations, not fabrication drawings.
