Read depth in light
Relief is perceived through shadow as much as outline. A shallow change can remain legible when highlights and edges are carefully placed; excessive detail may disappear at the intended viewing distance.
A maker should test scale, lighting and the direction of tool marks before committing to the final surface.
Different processes, different evidence
Chasing can refine cast seams and restore detail. Engraving creates cut lines. Repoussé and chasing may work metal from opposite faces. Stone carving removes material and brings different fracture and dust concerns.
Tool marks are not defects by default. They can document process, but they should be intentional and consistent with the object’s use.
Safety boundary
Sharp tools, flying fragments, noise, vibration and mineral or metal dust require controlled working methods. Use effective extraction, secure workholding and training for each tool and material.
